Manchester United star Chris Smalling has insisted that Sevilla weren’t dangerous during the goalless draw in the Champions League knockout stages.
The Englishman started the match, helping his team secure a clean sheet away from home in what was far from a vintage performance.
United failed to truly threaten the Spanish side and appeared to play for the draw in the hopes of wrapping up the tie in front of their own fans.
Jose Mourinho’s men will have to ensure they win the return fixture at Old Trafford as a draw will certainly knock them out on the away goals rule.
Smalling though believes that the La Liga team weren’t dominant and that everything went to plan during the match for the Red Devils.
According to ESPN, Chris said to MUTV: “I think the game plan was executed as the manager wanted. I think they tired in the second half in the last 20 minutes when we applied pressure.
“It was very open in the second half but it’s a result which means we’re confident at home. It opened up in the second half and obviously in the last five minutes of the first half.
“David made a couple of good saves but other than that they didn’t really have many clear-cut chances and it’s in our hands at home — you have to win at home to go through anyway.
“The atmosphere was very good here, you can tell it was emotional and we had to dig in at times.”
While Sevilla weren’t too troubling other than a chance or two that was fantastically dealt with by David de Gea, Manchester United were hardly easy on the eye either.
Mourinho’s men had a single shot on target for the whole 90 minutes in an incredibly drab affair with the shot only coming from youngster Scott McTominay.
The academy product’s effort even came from outside the box just to prove that United struggled to break down their opposition or to create anything of note.
Given that Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba were all on the pitch it’s quite shocking that the team still looked lacking of star quality.
The Red Devils starting XI appeared to be strong enough on paper to take apart the Spanish team and other than Romelu Lukaku’s missed opportunity, have nothing to be proud of on the night.
