England will attempt to pip Scotland to Manchester United’s young midfielder Scott McTominay, suggest ESPN FC.
The 21-year-old began to break through at Man United at the back end of last season and has earned the trust of manager Jose Mourinho with a number of composed and solid performances since becoming a first team matchday squad regular in this campaign.
He’s now made 16 appearances for the club’s first team, with nine of those starts, after starting in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Sevilla, a 0-0 draw against the La Liga side.
Mourinho has urged new Scotland manager Alex McLeish to give McTominay his first senior call-up. Born in England, but with Scottish heritage, McTominay has previously indicated a preference to Scotland, but has represented neither country at youth level and is available for selection for both.
“I’m probably more Scottish than I am English,” McTominay said.
England U21 boss Aidy Boothroyd has been following his progress and ESPN FC report that England will look to hand him an under-21 call-up for games against Romania and Ukraine in March to ensure he becomes part of the set-up.
Scotland could offer a more lucrative chance of a senior call-up for friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary, but ESPN suggest that England are hopeful they will be successful.
As of yet, McTominay has been focused on making it in United’s first team, something he told Scottish performance director Malky Mackay back in November 2017.
