Jose Mourinho got his tactics wrong against Tottenham Hotspur and his side were blown away as a result.
For reasons that aren’t clear at all, the 55-year-old abandoned the more fluid 4-3-3 system in favour of an overly constricting 4-2-3-1 that left Paul Pogba miles away from Manchester United’s attacking options and invited the hosts to pile on pressure through middle.
Supporters will demand a reaction against Huddersfield Town this Saturday and hope that their manager, having lost once again to a top six rival, learns from his tactical blunder at Wembley.
With that in mind, here is a potential XI for Saturday’s meeting with David Wagner’s side at Old Trafford.
The point of this particular XI is that it doesn’t strongly reflect what we see on the pitch, giving us a kind of rough outline instead.
Man United’s best performances this season, after all, have come when players have had fewer constraints to worry about – a freedom to move where they please and form more natural avenues of attack.
And the 4-3-3 will no doubt help to facilitate that kind of attitude going forward, with Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez will operating within a close proximity further forward and interchanging positions.
On the vast Wembley turf it looked as if key attacking players couldn’t have been more discordant and isolated in their positioning. And that, more than anything else, needs to be rectified on Saturday afternoon.
