Manchester United are set to challenge Manchester City in their pursuit of Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri over the summer, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho is on the lookout for midfield reinforcements next summer as the club prepares for Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick both leaving the club.
The Portuguese is on the verge of completing some superb business this month after agreeing a four year contract with Alexis Sanchez – a player widely tipped to end up at Man City after they bid £60m for him over the summer.
And according to the Guardian‘s Ed Aarons, Man United have sent scouts to monitor Seri during Nice’s 2-2 draw with AS Monaco last week, while City have opened talks with his representatives over a potential summer transfer.
The platform for another transfer battle in the summer has already been set. Mourinho attacked the United board over December for failing to match their rival’s ambition in the market and they have responded emphatically, handing out a package to Sanchez that he couldn’t refuse and, by the looks of things, already assessing a number of options ahead of the summer.
And Seri is certainly a cause worth perusing: he was awarded the Marc-Vivien Foé trophy for the best African player in France and came desperately close to joining Barcelona, only for the move to collapse and set in motion a downturn in form this season.
But make no mistake, this is a player capable of lighting up games with his technical prowess and stealing him from under City’s nose would a major sucker-punch.
