Rio Ferdinand has claimed that if he was a player today, he’d rather play for Manchester City than his former-club Manchester United.
The centre-back turned BT Sport pundit won a collection of league titles, a UEFA Champions League and a FIFA Club World Cup while at Man United between 2002 and 2014.
However, with Man City now top of the table and leading United in the title race by more than 10 points, Ferdinand suggested they are the team to join for current players looking to win trophies.
His comments came as he discussed Alexis Sanchez’s links to both Manchester clubs. United are reportedly willing to pay Arsenal’s £35m asking price and so could beat City to the Chilean’s signature.
“I am going to be honest, if he has got an option to go from Arsenal to go to Manchester City or Manchester United, as a footballer who wanted to win trophies and would judge myself based on trophies being won, at the moment Manchester City looks like the place to go for him in that respect,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport, shocking some, after Tottenham Hotspur’s win against Everton.
“They are top of the league, they are going to win the league this season, they are in the Champions League, they are looking like they will be in the final for the League Cup, the FA Cup as well potentially,” he explained.
“So he has got more opportunities to win trophies there.”
Really, Ferdinand’s comments shouldn’t be misconstrued. He is simply saying that City look set to win more trophies than United in the next couple of years. Though Pep Guardiola is yet to guide the Blues to glory in any competition as of yet, it does appear that that will be the case.
He cleared up his views on Twitter on Sunday morning, saying “As an ex player… fan… someone who loves the club.. I would love to see #Sanchez in a @ManUtd shirt playing under Jose!!!”
The 29-year-old looks close to joining United despite it looking certain that he’d sign for City either this month or in the summer when his contract at the Emirates runs out and a free transfer would be possible.
While United are willing to cough up £35m and the player’s high agent fees of up to £10m, City are not, and although they haven’t walked away from the deal, they may do so.
