Jose Mourinho has refused to confirm whether Manchester United are close to signing Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.
The 29-year-old appeared likely to join local title rivals Manchester City either this month or in the summer when his contract expires at the Emirates.
However, while Man United are reportedly willing to meet Arsenal’s £35m asking price for Sanchez, alongside high agent fees and huge wages, Man City have baulked at such fees.
Mourinho, though, refused to go into detail about the possibility of signing Sanchez.
“I have no idea,” the Portuguese insisted. “Today I was completely separate. I was just focused on the match.”
The United boss revealed ahead of Monday night’s 3-0 win against Stoke City that Henrikh Mkhitaryan had been dropped because of doubts over his future, with the Armenian potentially involved in a deal for Sanchez. He confirmed that was an option once more.
“Is he [Mkhitaryan] going to be involved in a deal? It’s possible. It’s also possible he stays.”
“I am not going to speak about a hypothetical situation,” Mourinho said. “Probably there are other clubs interested, also some other clubs are trying. He’s an Arsenal player.” #MUFC
However, he later outlined his hopes that Sanchez would sign for United.
“No news on Alexis Sanchez, he is an Arsenal player, if he stays it’s great for Arsenal, if he comes to us, great for us, if he goes to another club, great for them.”
