Latest injury for Thibaut Courtois gives Antonio Conte further selection headache ahead of Brighton game

Thibaut Courtois has added to the growing list of problems Antonio Conte faces, after sustaining an ankle injury that will see him miss the trip to Brighton.

Midfielder Danny Drinkwater is also struggling to be fit, which could see Conte be without six senior players as they take on the Seagulls.

Ross Barkley is set to appear on the substitutes’ bench, but Conte admits he has been forced to think his game plan given the amount of injuries and suspensions that have plagued his team.

Chelsea have also struggled in their attempts to strengthen the squad, with Andy Carroll’s untimely injury forcing the Blues’ to look elsewhere as they seek more firepower up front.

One bit of positive news for Chelsea is that Emerson Palmieri from Roma looks likely to go ahead. The marauding left-back/left-wingback is also reportedly keen on joining the defending champions.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea also want to sign Palmieri’s teammate Edin Džeko. Both clubs are believed to be working on completing a deal, with Roma wanting €60million for the pair. Michy Batshuayi could also be included in the deal.

Asked whether or not he is confident Chelsea will sign the players he wants this month, Conte replied;

Confident? Confident is a big word. We have to wait. I give my opinion to my club, but, as I said before, the final decision is for the club.

I have to wait and see what happens in this transfer market. But I repeat: I’m very calm on this aspect, also because I enjoy working with my players in the right way, and I’m very happy with their commitment. I’m happy to work with these players.

Then, if the club wants to help us, we’re happy. Otherwise we’ll continue in this way, continue to put all ourselves every day in trying to improve as a team and bring satisfaction to our fans.
