Alexis Sanchez is a player that fits the mould of a Manchester United star perfectly, ex-coach Rene Meulensteen has claimed.
The Chilean forward is expected to sign from Arsenal, in a swap-deal with Man United’s attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, before the weekend’s games to allow him to make his debut for the club against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.
He had been thought likely to join local title rivals Manchester City, either this month or in summer when his contract at the Emirates comes to an end, until United swooped in and outdid City.
Meulensteen, who was a high-profile coach at United under Sir Alex Ferguson during the club’s most successful period. He helped the Reds to three UEFA Champions League finals, including one ultimate victory, and three Premier League titles between 2007 and 2013.
He was effusive in his praise about Sanchez, who fits the club perfectly.
“If they have managed to come to terms, I think it is a really good move for Manchester United,” Meulensteen told Goal.
“And it is a really good move for Alexis Sanchez.
“Because he is in the mould, he is the type of player that Manchester United fans would like to see – high energy, high work rate, he creates, he scores goals,” the former-coach explained.
“He is an exciting player to watch. If it happens, it will be good for both parties.”
Sanchez’s influence on the side will stretch far and wide. His individual talent is unquestionable and his ability to win game single-handedly has regularly been on show at Arsenal.
However, his mentality, if harnessed correctly, can have a great influence on the rest of the team when being beaten.
At Arsenal, he’s often cut a frustrated figure, but if manager Jose Mourinho can ensure Sanchez’s winning mentality rubs off on the rest of his players, it will create a far stronger squad overall.
