Jose Mourinho has revealed that Alexis Sanchez had “one-and-a-half feet” at Manchester City before he signed for Manchester United on Monday evening.
The Chilean forward joined from Arsenal in the biggest move of the January transfer window. Henrikh Mkhitaryan went the other way in a rare straight player-swap deal.
Sanchez had been expected to join cross-city title rivals Man City either this month or in summer when his contract at the Emirates was set to expire. They had come close to completing a deal with Arsenal for the player last summer, but it fell through despite figures of £60m being banded about.
Man United swooped in at the start of January and took Sanchez from under City’s noses to secure a world-class player for no transfer fee. Mourinho hailed his board for mastering the deal, claiming he should take none of the credit.
“I want to make it clear it was not me,” Mourinho told MUTV. “Totally the credit is for the owners and the board. They did it – a player like Alexis Sanchez.
“It looks like it is difficult for people to say, ‘Well done, you did it in a fantastic way’. He was with one-and-a-half feet in another club.”
Mourino went on to lament the treatment of his players and his club in the media. The Portuguese has a negative reputation, and rightly so in some senses, having infamously poked then FC Barcelona coach Tito Villanova in the eye whilst at Real Madrid. He’s got other black marks on his record.
However, he has been treated unfairly at times at United, given his behavioural record has been pretty perfect, with only minor descrepencies such as stepping onto the pitch and kicking a water bottle, both of which he was sent to the stands for.
He’s regularly complained that his side is subject to harsher criticism than others and looked to hit back fiercely.
“It looks like it is hard to give credit when we win matches there is always an ‘If’.
“When a player does fantastically well there is always a negative,” Mourinho said, before launching an offensive on the media by saying, “but the reality is without Manchester United the industry would be in trouble, this is part of being at such a big club.”
