Jose Mourinho has made it clear that Manchester United would not welcome any new arrivals over the January transfer window.
Alexis Sanchez, who seemed destined for Manchester City, arrived from Arsenal in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan, while Axel Tuanzebe and James Wilson both joined Aston Villa and Sheffield United respectively.
Reports have claimed that Mourinho, keen to sign a midfielder to replace Michael Carrick, was in a race with other Premier League outfits to sign Jean Michael Seri this month.
But Mourinho made it clear that the club would not oversee any new arrivals or departures ahead of the Wednesday transfer deadline.
“Us? No. Tuanzebe goes on loan and nobody is leaving, nobody is coming,” he said. “Our transfer market in the summer will be short.”
By noting that United’s transfer market will be short, Mourinho doesn’t mean he is planning for a David Moyes 2013 kind of summer, but rather that the World Cup in Russia and the new rule stating that the transfer window ends before the start of next season – instead of three league games after – means that managers everywhere will have precious little time to get deals over the line.
Mourinho will, no doubt, seek to strike agreements with particular players ahead of the World Cup to alleviate the burden of trying to secure key players during a month – between mid-July and mid-August – when he will want to be focusing on his team’s shape above anything.
