Paul Pogba must continue to be used at number 10 by Jose Mourinho to get the best out of him, Graeme Souness has insisted.
The Frenchman put in a Man of the Mach performance as he captained Manchester United to a 2-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park on Monday evening.
He assisted twice as he drifted onto the left flank constantly. He was unstoppable at times, showing his creativity, vision and sunique skill set in a superb second-half display.
“I’ve been critical of him,” Souness admitted on Sky Sports. “I don’t see him as a central midfielder, a playmaker type.
“That position on the left today, where he drifted. You see him when he gets one on one with people, he’s seeing a completely different picture, he’s got the trickery, the power and the pace to get past people and then pick a pass out.”
Pogba was played at number 10 against Everton, with Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera the midfield duo behind. He was given a licence to roam and used it to full effect.
It was a performance of similar ilk to those that United fans drooled oer when Pogba was playing for Juventus in Italy.
Souness explained why the Frenchman is better further forward that in central midfield.
“In the middle, he gets lost in the game, his decision-making when he’s in the central areas, he doesn’t see it [the right pass].
“He’s 24 years old, he may develop that. But right now I’d be playing him in the wider areas, because when he gets in these situations, he gets shots off, picks out passes, he makes things happen.”
Souness’ criticism of Pogba this season has been over the top frequently. He’s been unfairly treated because he cost United £8m in 2016.
However, there’s no doubt that Pogba looked better when he drifted onto the left. The only question to be asked is whether the Matic-Herrera pairing can cope with a higher-quality side than Everton.
