Jesse Lingard has revealed why his goalscoring form has taken such a stunning upturn in the last six weeks.
The Englishman revealed his new position on the left side has allowed him to cut inside and get into better positions.
Lingard has scored more goals since the start of December since any Premier League player other than Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.
“I’ve been pushing myself to get as many goals as I can this season,” Lingard said, suggesting that it’s partly been down to his own mental strength recently.
“Playing on the left the boss has given me licence to cut inside.”
The attacking midfielder also commented on United’s title chances, with the Reds sitting 12 points behind local title rivals Manchester City who have one game-in-hand.
“We’re only halfway through the season and we have to have a winning mentality,” he told Sky Sports after Monday evening’s 2-0 win against Everton where he scored the second goal with another wonderful finish.
He’s scored seven goals in his last nine games, and almost all of those strikes have been extraordinary.
Lingard has now scored more goals than Kevin de Bruyne, Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard this season. Though not usually considered a starter for England, this current form will put him firmly in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI for the 2018 FIFA World Cup if it continues throughout the season.
He has matured and come into his own in the last six weeks. Now one of United’s most important players, long may it continues.
