Borussia Dortmund have stepped up efforts to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan over the January transfer window, according to reports from Germany.
The Armenian has been a peripheral figure under Jose Mourinho since November after continually failing to impress in the No.10 role.
Reports have claimed that Inter Milan and Dortmund, his former club, have expressed interest in handing him a lifeline this month.
And according to local media outlet Ruhr Nachrichten, Dortmund have intensified efforts to bring Mkhitaryan back to the Westfalenstadion.
Mourinho has called on the club’s hierarchy to provide him with a ‘magician’ forward capable of unlocking defences through zeal rather than graft over the transfer window and the 28-year-old will need to be moved along to make way for a new arrival in that area.
Mkhitaryan has dramatically failed to fulfil that role this season, save for the first three games, and you can tell his confidence is shot to pieces, and worsening with each anonymous display.
The Armenian’s performance against Southampton was one of the worst individual showings at Old Trafford in living memory: he lost the ball 18 times in the 64 minutes he was on the pitch, typifying Man United’s blunt-edged, neurotic approach on the day.
For whatever reason, it just isn’t working for him, and a change of scenery feels like the only option.
