Manchester City have walked away from the race to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, prompting Chelsea to make a late push for the Chile international, according to reports.
Pep Guardiola, having come close to signing him in the summer, looked set to sign Sanchez this month but found himself outbid by Manchester United, who have stated they are prepared to meet Arsenal’s £35m valuation of the player.
Arsene Wenger stated on Sunday that Sanchez’s future would be solved imminently, with Man United in pole position to secure the forward’s services.
And according to M.E.N‘s Samuel Luckhurst, Man City have pulled out of the race after refusing to improve their £20m offer, but Chelsea are launch a surprise swoop of their own to sign the 29-year-old.
I’m still not quite over how United’s deal to sign Pedro from Barcelona, described as “done” for a good month, fell through after Chelsea came out of nowhere to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
But you sense that, over the last few days, Jose Mourinho has made rapid progress with the Sanchez deal – so much so that City, after offering Arsenal £60m in the summer, have now given up.
They are firmly in the driving seat, but Chelsea’s sudden emergence means this saga is far from over.
