Barkley, Dzeko & Palmieri represent a brilliant January for Chelsea

January transfer windows..historic for panic buys and problem-solving. Notoriously, they’re pretty difficult to get right given the mass amount of money discussed, the heightened demand and the lack of consistency among Premier League clubs.

The new year is still fresh and Chelsea have already conceded defeat in their title defence, but they could still be about to complete one of their most successful January windows in recent years.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City appear to be running away with the title. The Blues have two legs against Barcelona in the Champions League on the horizon and rumours about Antonio Conte’s future are still rumbling on behind the scenes. It’s fair to say all is not well at Stamford Bridge.

Despite that, the current Premier League champions could be about to finish the January transfer window in a very strong position. Long-term transfer target Ross Barkley completed his move to Stamford Bridge for just £15 million, with Chelsea piping Spurs to the signature of the England international.

The Blues are also on the verge of completing a double swoop for AS Roma duo Edin Dzeko and defender Emerson Palmieri, who will both provide competition for Alvaro Morata and Marcos Alonso respectively.

Summer transfers are historically long, drawn-out process, backed up with months of scouting and due diligence. When January swings around, the need for reinforcements is clear for all to see. Prices up go as demand increases and the pressure mounts on those involved.

However, should Dzeko and Emerson both follow Barkley through the doors at Chelsea, the trio would represent a very window for the club.

Recent January signings include Matt Miazga, Juan Cuadrado, Mohamed Salah and Nemanja Matic among others. Three of which are no longer at the club, with American defender Miazga currently on loan in the Eredivisie.

Barkley, the first signing the club completed this month, can be seen very much as a free hit for the Blues. A potential long-term investment. The former Everton midfielder is a player that the club have had in their sights for some time, viewed as a long-term successor to Frank Lampard, who he has drawn comparisons to in the past.

The Chelsea new boy, like Lampard, will wear the number eight shirt during his time at the club. For just £15 million, the Blues have the possibility for potential sell-on value, should they wish to move the player on in the future or make the investment look like a steal in years to come by developing him into the player many expected him to be.

Tactical discipline and consistency are arguably the two biggest areas of Barkley’s game that need to be improved. Head coach Antonio Conte has a track record during his time at Chelsea for improving individuals. It may not be the Italian who is managing the club next season, but the seeds will certainly be sown.

Palmieri, once very highly thought of in both Italy and Brazil, earmarked as a potential successor to Alex Sandro, who himself was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea during both the summer and January window.

The Brazilian-born defender impressed many last season for the Giallorossi but saw his development struck down by a cruciate ligament injury.

Palmieri was on the verge of making the Italian national team squad after he committed his international future to the Azzurri before his injury on the last day of the season left him sidelined.

As with every long-term injury, the repercussions can be enormous. Will he return as the same player was beforehand? Following the summer signing of Aleksandar Kolarov, Palmieri has fallen out of favour and featured just twice for Roma this season in all competitions.

While he only initially joins as a back-up to Marcos Alonso, the chance is there for the 23-year-old to make the position his own going forward. It solves a headache for Conte, who has been unable to rotate at left wing-back.

Kenedy has fallen out of the first-team picture for Premier League action and has since been allowed to move on to Newcastle for the remainder of the season.

The deal to sign Edin Dzeko perhaps came as the biggest surprise but is one that can benefit both parties. Roma need to sell help balance the books, despite the former Manchester City forward winning the Capocannoniere last season with 29 league goals.

Roma completed a deal to sign the highly-rated Patrik Schick over the summer, leaving them with a replacement ready should they decide to sell the Bosnian in January.

Chelsea have endured some mixed results when buying from Italy in recent years, but Dzeko comes with five years of Premier League football under his belt already.

The ‘settling in’ period shouldn’t be so stark for Dzeko, compared to that of the aforementioned Cuadrado, who looked scared of English football due to the mismanagement from Jose Mourinho.

Dzeko understandably had concerns over the amount of game time he would receive at Stamford Bridge, but ‘target men’ have always had a place in Conte’s squads.

At Juventus, Fernando Llorente found a place in the Turin side. During his time in charge of Italy, both Ciro Immobile and Graziano Pelle were preferred options to lead the line.

Since taking charge at Chelsea it has been clear to see that transfers both in and out have not always gone to plan for Conte, or in gone in line with what the Italian would like.

As a coach, the former Juve boss is known to prefer experience over youth, so for Chelsea to break their policy of signing players over the age of 30 could be seen as a positive step towards resolving the 48-year-old’s future, but the Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal only raises more questions than it answers.
