Alexis Sanchez has revealed he spoke to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry before his move from the Gunners to Manchester United.
The Chilean forward signed for the Reds on a four-and-a-half year deal on Monday evening with Henrikh Mkhitaryan joining Arsenal in the biggest transfer of the January window.
Sanchez told MUTV that he couldn’t turn down the chance to join Man United for a number of reasons, including the fans, the history and working with manager Jose Mourinho.
However, on Instagram in a post thanking Arsenal’s staff, players and fans, Sanchez revealed he spoke to Henry on the day of his move to Old Trafford.
“I remember today, a conversation I had with Henry, a historic Arsenal player, who changed club for the same reason and today is my turn,” Sanchez wrote.
It’s well-known that the 29-year-old felt there was a lack of ambition at the club and wanted to see manager Arsene Wenger bring in more players on his level to try and get Arsenal back to winning Premier League titles and challenging for the UEFA Champions League, something they have not done for over a decade under Wenger’s management.
That wasn’t going to happen, and it’s why Henry left after Arsenal’s defeat in the Champions League final in 2006. Beaten by FC Barcelona, Henry joined them shortly after, recognising he needed to leave Arsenal to win big things.
Sanchez has joined United to win trophies, play alongside great players and play under a great manager. He clearly has great respect for Arsenal and all involved at the club, but, much like Robin van Persie did in 2012, knows he has to move up North to have a chance at winning the title and at competing in Europe’s elite club football competition.
