Former footballer and pundit Tony Cascarino has pointed out that Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United don’t have many world-class players and instead are well stocked with ‘very good’ players.
Not for the first time this season, United’s squad have but put on blast for not being talented enough to challenge for the Premier League title.
The Red Devils have been at the centre of much debate this week due to their 2-2 draw with Burnley at Old Trafford.
The result came after another draw with Leicester City and a loss to Bristol City with fans becoming increasingly frustrated by the inconsistent form.
Cascarino believes Mourinho only has a couple of world-class players and are short of real talent in their squad.
Speaking to The Times, Tony said: “I’m not surprised José Mourinho says he needs to spend more money — Manchester United don’t have many world-class players.
“David De Gea is probably the best goalkeeper in the world and I rate Antonio Valencia as one the best right backs in Europe.
“Paul Pogba has potential to be world class and Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are still inconsistent. After that United are short.
“They have lots of what I would call very good players, in the seven or eight out of ten category.
“I include in that one man who struggled yesterday — Romelu Lukaku — and another who shone — Jesse Lingard.
“I have said before that I rate Lukaku as a goalscorer and he’ll get 20 goals this season. It’s more that he isn’t that strong technically and can sometimes go missing in games.
“He was excellent in the 2-2 draw against Leicester City but looked off the pace against Burnley and it’s in these games that United need inspiration and star quality.
“Instead they relied on another ‘very good’ player in Lingard.”
The recent rise in stories of Manchester United’s apparently poor squad is a little strange considering how pundits were praising the club’s depth at the start of the season.
United’s red hot form at the beginning of the campaign saw fans hail Jose’s squad building and how the team now has capable players in each position.
The Red Devils seemingly had at least two footballers competing for the same spot in the starting XI but have now suddenly become short of quality numbers.
In defence the Portuguese manager has Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe as the club’s senior options.
However, everyone barring Lindelof and Tuanzebe have been absent at various times during the season due to injury problems.
For all the club’s depth, injuries have once more struck United’s spine and it’s starting to look as though Mourinho has finally lost patience with this issue.
