Marouane Fellaini has hit out at Southampton striker Shane Long for a horrible tackle he made on him during Manchester United’s 1-0 win at Saint Mary’s back in September.
The striker picked up a yellow card for clattering into the side of Fellaini’s leg after he had released the ball.
Amazingly, he carried on and produced a combative display, but missed the following game away to CSKA Moscow.
And Fellaini, speaking in a recent interview, noted that he could have easily suffered a broken leg.
“It could have been worse … there was that attack by Shane Long,” he said. “Have you seen that? Do you see how much crazy luck I’ve had? He could have broken my leg!”
“Without that tape around my ankle it would have certainly broken, and I would have been out for six months.
“I only missed the Champions League game against CSKA Moscow. When I do this I am suspended three matches. Maybe five.
“I am called a fool, a slander and a murderer. But I am a good person.”
Fellaini returned a week later to produce a ‘Man of the Match’ performance against Crystal Palace but then picked up another knock on international duty that sidelined him for a month.
He returned against Chelsea, started in Basel, but has not featured since then with a knee injury deemed a ‘mystery’ by the club’s medical staff.
In other words, he has only made two starts since that crunching tackle from Long, and you can’t help but wonder whether the effects of that injury are playing a part in his prolonged absence from the squad.
