Wes Brown has claimed Roy Keane’s influence at Manchester United stretched on many years after the Irishman left the club in 2005.
The pair played together for many years at Old Trafford, sharing the treble-winning season in 1999 in the first of Brown’s two UEFA Champions League glories with the club in a prestigious career.
There have been complaints over a lack of leadership at Man United for some time now, with Keane always referenced as the example of what the club need to fix that issue.
Brown suggested recently that Keane’s professionalism and desire continued to have an influence on players in the squad after he left to join Celtic.
“Keano set such high standards at the club that he influenced Manchester United long after he’d left,” Brown said.
“He trained every day like it was the Champions League final against Liverpool.”
Perhaps the extent to which Keane’s attitude was perfect and his performances superb is overstated sometimes. He is always cited as the figure for United players, particularly midfielders, to emulate now.
However, there’s no doubt United’s players could do with a Keane-like figure in the dressing room, something that has been said so many times it’s become a cliché.
