Paul Scholes has urged Henrikh Mkhitaryan to keep his game simple to make a return to form after a woeful spell in a Manchester United shirt.
The Armenian started the season well, racking up five assists within just a few games, but his form nosedived from October onwards.
Jose Mourinho dropped the attacking midfielder, generally in favour of Jesse Lingard, in November, explaining that his poor performances had gone on too long,
He made his first start since November 5th on Saturday evening in a poor 0-0 draw at home to Southampton. He was subbed off in the second half to great relief from the Old Trafford crowd.
“He’s low on confidence,” Scholes noted. “The manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] always said to me, keep it simple and your game will come back.
“He needs to stick with it, he knows there’s quality there. Hopefully that will come back to him.”
Mkhitaryan has shown himself to be a fantastic player when in form. But he’s rarely hit good form consistently. The last few weeks have seen him linked with moves to Inter Milan, Galatasaray, as well as a return to Borussia Dortmund, the club he left in 2016 to join Man United for around £26m.
Whether he’ll get many more chances to prove himself to Mourinho will be seen, but he’s now had a half against Burnley and 64 minutes against Southampton to show his worth, and his reputation has only gone down.
His final ball in the first half against the Saints on Saturday was atrocious, and he lost possession 18 times in just 64 minutes on the pitch in a performance that will not convince Mourinho it’s worth keeping him at the club, let alone in the side.
