Paul Scholes: Manchester United players are underperforming and they lack urgency

Manchester United’s players are underperforming due to a lack of urgency, Paul Scholes suggested after the Reds drew a third consecutive game to finish 2017.

Jose Mourinho’s side are now third, one of the first times this season they’ve dropped out of the top two after battling to keep up with title favourites Manchester City since October.

Man United were utterly uninspiring in a 0-0 draw against Southampton having failed to beat both Leicester and Burnley either side of Christmas in the two prior games.

They’re now four games without a win, beaten and embarrassed 2-1 by Bristol City before this run of draws. Scholes insists they should be doing far better, and no one would disagree.

“These players are good enough to win games, they’re underperforming,” Scholes told BT Sport during Saturday evening’s post-match analysis.

“It’s a lack of urgency, it seems like they’re winning 3-0 every game and they don’t need to win the game.”

It’s a very valid point. While the first half saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan ruin a couple of fine moves for United, the second half was a poor performance all-round from the team.

They sat back completely unnecessarily against a side who were beaten 5-2 by Tottenham Hotspur just four days at Wembley.

Scholes also questioned Paul Pogba’s influence. The Frenchman has captained United in the last three games due to the absence of Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick.

“Where’s the Pogba we saw at Juventus? He’s just strolling through a game.,” Scholes asked.

Pogba has been one of United’s better players, and some of the moves he pulled off in the first half made your jaw drop in admiration. More questions have to be asked of the others, but Pogba was quiet in the second half, and must take the game by the scruff of the neck.
