Pundit Danny Murphy has claimed that Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United have thrown away the Premier League title after their 2-2 draw with Leicester City.
The Red Devils had conceded first in the end-to-end match but managed to stage a comeback through a Juan Mata brace.
The Spaniard’s efforts went in vain though after his teammates conceded a last gasp goal to share the spoils.
The points dropped means that fierce rivals and league leaders Manchester City are currently 13 points away from United who sit in second place.
Although it is still December, Murphy believes the title race is all but over for Jose Mourinho and his men.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Danny said: “It [result] should have been out of Leicester’s reach. Mourinho was right. They should have killed them off many times.
“You can call it a lack of professionalism, a bit of bad luck.
“United with that draw and with the inability to kill Leicester off have basically thrown away their [title] chance, if they had any.”
In terms of the Premier League, the campaign is now at the halfway point with all the teams having played 19 matches out of the 38 there are in a season.
Manchester United have 13 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses, resulting in 42 points- ordinarily a total that would see the team at the top of the table.
Unfortunately for Jose Mourinho and his men, Manchester City have 18 wins and a single draw, equalling 55 points at the halfway stage of the season.
For all the criticise both the players and manager are receiving at the moment, they’re actually having a pretty decent season and there’s clear signs of progression from last season.
Supporters have quickly forgotten just how poor United were last season and that they were only saved by the club’s ability to win the Europa League.
This season has seen the Red Devils leap above the heralded Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham sides as well as the ‘attractive football’ Arsenal side.
