Player Ratings: Man United miss out, Romelu Lukaku very disappointing

David de Gea 6 – Couldn’t do much about either goals. Produced a sensational low stop from Kevin de Bruyne in the second half.

Antonio Valencia 6 – Took up some good positions in the first half and rarely looked troubled by Manchester City’s attack, but once again faded in the second period.

Chris Smalling 5 – As the focal point of defence, the Englishman needed to bring Manchester United’s back four further up the pitch. Looked static and seemed to let Man City run at him too often.

Marcos Rojo 6 – Displayed plenty of defensive clout, bullying the likes of Raheem Sterling and David Silva in the box, but lacked discipline at times. Came off at half time.

Ashley Young 6 – Did well to minimise the forward impetus of Kyle Walker but needlessly played Silva on for City’s opener.

Nemanja Matic 5 – With Paul Pogba suspended, it was down to the Serbian to bring the thrust from midfield, but he was painfully cautious in possession throughout. Couldn’t get Man United going.

Ander Herrera 6 – Brought his usual energy and tenacity to table but lacked control at times, giving away a needless foul that led to City’s second.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Couldn’t get on the ball in the first half but improved as the game went on, providing a superb pass through the lines for Lukaku. Didn’t offer the same composure seen against Watford or Arsenal.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Without doubt United’s biggest attacking threat after moving to the right hand side. Took his goal brilliantly and looked the most likely to open the visitors up.

Anthony Martial 6 – Produced a number of nice touches and worked hard for the team but didn’t test Walker nearly enough.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – Another no-show in a big game. Failed to offer any productive hold-up play and spurned a glorious chance late on, firing a point blanc shot straight at Ederson. Hardly covered himself in glory for both of City’s goals.

Substitutes

Victor Lindelof 7 – Defended with composure after coming on and supplied some impressive balls forward.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic N/A

Juan Mata N/A
