Jose Mourinho may be partially at fault for Paul Pogba’s sending off in Manchester United’s superb 3-1 win against Arsenal.
The Frenchman was dismissed with just under 20 minutes remaining in an enthralling game, one of the best in the Premier League for some time.
He had been having a fantastic game in midfield, playing a crucial role in Jesse Lingard‘s second-half strike that put Man United 3-1 up and secured a solid advantage before a backs-against-the-wall display in the final stages ensured a great three points.
“He was very heated and I’m of the opinion that if a manager gives you a message in a game you accept it as a player,” Lampard told BT Sport after the game.
“You can talk about it in the dressing room afterwards – you don’t need to throw arms as he does here.
“Considering he got the red card a few minutes afterwards I think he got emotional I think he lost his head.
“It wasn’t a tackle he needed to make. You’re leading 3-1, you’re protecting a lead and you understand the importance of the game and I think it’s affected his approach to the tackle.”
Lampard is blaming Pogba more than Mourinho, clearly. A player of incredible composure himself, Lampard is effectively telling Pogba: listen to the manager, take it on, if you disagree with it or are unhappy, speak about it afterwards but don’t let it affect your game.
It’s hard to tell whether Pogba did let it affect his game. His tackle for the sending off against Hector Bellerin was hardly malicious, it was an accidental stamp due to the unconventional shape of Bellerin’s body in the tackle. A red card, yes, but not malicious and not indicative of an aggressive attitude from Pogba.
