Nemanja Matic has admitted Manchester United are far stronger with his midfield partner Paul Pogba.
The Frenchman is set to serve the third and final game of a three-match suspension for a red card received against Arsenal in Man United’s clinical and ruthless 3-1 win at the Emirates two weeks ago.
Pogba missed last Sunday’s Manchester derby, which United lost 2-1 in a poor performance, and would have made a difference. Whether the result would have been different is impossible to say, but Pogba’s presence would have undoubtedly made United look a far better side.
“He’s a very important player for us, he always brings some extra quality to our team. So of course we miss him, but we also have some very important players to substitute him,” Matic said.
“Obviously when he comes back, for sure we are going to be stronger because as you know he has a lot of quality and he is very important to the club.”
Pogba’s contribution to the side is multi-dimensional. Not only does he provide a remarkable passing range, his ability, good, though rare, long-shots, some stunning pieces of skill and brilliant vision, but he takes the players around him to another level.
Matic’s defensive discipline helps Pogba, but the assistance is mutual, with Matic looking far better when Pogba is available. Striker Romelu Lukaku has shown better form with Pogba in the side. The list of beneficiaries goes on and on.
He is United’s world-class outfield player, probably the only one who matches David de Gea’s abilities in goal. He’ll be back very soon, and United need him, because even Wednesday night’s 1-0 win against AFC Bournemouth was lacklustre.
