After last week’s disastrous first ten minutes against Manchester United, the Gunners needed to start this one quickly.
They did not and conceded yet another early goal from a defensive error. Per Mertesacker gifted the ball to the opposition and then fell on the floor as the ball went through to Charlie Austin and he put the home side 1-0 up.
The Gunners put in a truly frustrating performance. They received a lot of possession but couldn’t really create anything in the way of a clear-cut opportunity.
That became a theme of the match for Arsenal with a performance which can only be described as toothless.
Eventually, Southampton were ground down and a simple chip into the box by Alexis Sanchez found Olivier Giroud whose glancing header rescued a point for the undeserving Gunners.
