Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has explained what his former rivals must do to become a truly great side.
Manchester City currently lead the Premier League table by 13 points, ahead of United who are in second place.
The substantial gap between the two sides has led to most neutrals calling the title chase all but over despite it still being December.
Although it’s unlikely that the Sky Blues will drop that many points by the end of the season, it’s wrong to crown them champions ahead of time.
Neville though believes that even if they win the title the Citizens can’t be called a great side yet and he explains why below.
Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the pundit said: “I can’t put City anywhere in terms of great teams as they haven’t won a league yet.
“When they win a league, you’ll say it’s a great achievement. But to be one of the great teams in English football history, you have to win multiple leagues – you have to win two or three.
“You think about Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich team or his Barcelona team, where he won multiple European cups – they are great teams.
“The Chelsea team under Jose Mourinho, the United team under Sir Alex and the Liverpool teams over the years – they are all great sides.
“I can’t say a team that wins the league once is truly great side – however, they are achieving great things.
“We’ve never seen anything like it. But, let’s just calm ourselves, and respect the bigger picture.
“I think they have to win more than one league championship and a European cup before they become a great side.”
Manchester United’s fierce local rivals were once dubbed as ‘noisy neighbours’ by Sir Alex Ferguson with many expecting them to overtake the Jose Mourinho’s men as Manchester’s best.
City’s financial power also allowed them to rise from the ashes of mediocracy but it’s fair to say they haven’t quite reached the same levels of success that previous English sides have.
Since famously winning the title in the 2011-12 season, Pep Guardiola’s side have only won it once more, the year after Ferguson’s retirement.
Out of six seasons, excluding this one, the Sky Blues have only won it twice with the club’s board even getting sick of their lack of local and European dominance.
Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Mancini were both fired for being unable to build on their previous successes despite winning a title each.
United fans will certainly be pleased by the above but unless Jose Mourinho can steer them right, they may face their own struggles in their aim to returning to dominance.
