Jose Mourinho has aimed a subtle dig at Manchester United’s board following his side’s 2-2 draw against Burnley on Boxing Day.
The 54-year-old, who has expressed a need for a winger, notably failed to secure the services of Ivan Perisic over the summer.
And home side looked bereft of attacking innovation against Sean Dyche’s men, with Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard – two players who were at the club during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign – providing the only real threat going forward.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho pointed towards the way Pep Guardiola secured all of his transfer targets with ease over the summer.

Put simply, Manchester City’s board signed every player Guardiola wanted, spending £140m on full-backs in the process, while Man United’s board failed to do the same for Mourinho.
And the problems go even deeper than that. Since the arrival of both managers, City have made 17 new signings and United just seven. There is a clear deficit when it comes to ambition going forward between two clubs and, in turn, a lack of clout in the market.
And such differences, week by week, are being reflected on the pitch. It has already cost United the title, and could cost them a whole lot more.
