Jose Mourinho has revealed how Manchester United’s players reacted to the side’s defeat in the Manchester derby last weekend.
The Portuguese insisted the attitude around the club’s Carrington Aon Training Complex was just as normal, because he tries to keep an ‘emotional balance’ with his teams.
Mourinho is often unanimated on the touchline, and doesn’t always celebrate goals. It’s a stark contrast to the Jose that pulled off a knee slide down the touchline in the UEFA Champions League as FC Porto manager at Old Trafford.
But he insists he doesn’t want his team to celebrate over the top, nor react to defeat too much.
“The next day the place was normal — as I like it,” Mourinho told reporters ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with West Bromwich Albion.
“I don’t like a circus when you win and you’re happy. I don’t like a sad place when you lose. I like an emotional balance. Bournemouth was difficult and we coped. Back to normal.”
It’s a professional attitude and mentality from Mourinho that ties into so much of what he does throughout the season: get the job done. Whatever the result, focus on moving on.
That’s how you create winners, by moving on immediately after winning. Sir Alex Ferguson’s great sides would be thinking about the next season as soon as the successful had finished.
And you cannot preach a mentality of don’t be too disheartened by a result if you then over-celebrate a victory, there has to be a balance.
While n the training ground, the attitude and atmosphere may have been fine, it’s clear United’s players were hugely impacted by the defeat, with a brawl in the tunnel taking place after last Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.
