Jose Mourinho has claimed that Manchester United are forced to spend more than their rivals because of a combination of unique factors.
The Portuguese put Man United on an elite pedestal at the top of world football, alongside clubs in Italy and Spain including two he has previously managed. He suggested, to reporters who questioned his spending record at Old Trafford, that United’s history and a pressure to win titles allows other clubs to charge bigger fees than for their Premier League rivals.
United and Mourinho’s spending has been compared regularly to that of Manchester City and Pep Guardiola, who are racing away with the title, and could go 15 points clear tonight with a win against Newcastle United.
“Do you think Milan, Real Madrid, Inter are not as big as we are? One thing is a club, another is a football team,” Mourinho said. “We are in the 2nd year of trying to rebuild what is not one of the best teams in the world?
“Manchester City are buying full-backs for the price of strikers,” Mourinho was quick to point out. His key point was the following, that “the price for big clubs are different to the price for other clubs.”
It’s certainly true to an extent. Clubs across world football know the spending power that United have, but also know the desperation of the club to return to winning titles after failing to be crowned English champions since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Clubs know they can charge United more because they are United.
“The boys are doing what they can, they are doing fine,” Mourinho also pointed out. “Eight points from 15? Last two matches, we had 15 chances and conceded three s*** goals.”
It begs the question at to whether United are currently in a period focusing on signing ‘Galactico’-esque players. Perhaps a change in transfer strategy should be considered.
