Jose Mourinho has revealed that injuries to Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian were the reason for Victor Lindelof starting at right back for Manchester United against Leicester City.
Lindelof has become a regular in the side recently, but he’s always been playing in a central defensive role for the Reds. It was a surprise to see him playing on the right on Saturday evening.
Mourinho hailed the experience of Lindelof, who arrived from Portuguese side Benfica in the summer for just over £30million, though took some time to settle in at Man United.
“[Matteo] Darmian is also injured,” Mourinho revealed to MUTV before Saturday’s game.
”We don’t have too many more options & Victor [Linelof] has experience to play in the position even at highest level.
“The last Euros he was there for Sweden, so it’s not new for him.”
While it’s true that Lindelof has experience there, so too does United’s young talent Axel Tuanzebe, who wasn’t in the matchday squad against Leicester,
The England under-21 international has played there at the highest level before, including away at Arsenal where he dealt with one of the league’s best forwards, Alexis Sanchez.
His chances have been limited this season, and he hasn’t played at all for the under-23s either, meaning it would have been a great opportunity to offer Tuanzebe a chance of 90 minutes in the Premier League again.
