Jose Mourinho has criticised Manchester United’s players’ “childish” loss of possession after a 2-2 draw against Leicester City.
The Reds were leading in added time against the Foxes on Saturday evening, but threw away their lead despite having had a multitude of chances to extend their lead in the second-half.
Harry Maguire’s 94th-minute equaliser after a defensive error sees Man United 13 points behind local title rivals Manchester City in the Premier League before Christmas, the biggest lead at this stage of the season in English top-flight history.
“We were punished for our mistakes and what can I say more than that,” Mourinho said.
“[It was an] easy match to win. We did everything to win, [but] we lose big chances like we did in front of the goal.
“[It wasn’t] just big chances, [it was also in] possession. Moments where it was easy to keep possession, I would say [we showed a] childish loss of possession and then you are punished in the end.”
The big chance misses – from Anthony Martial, who skied a shot over the crossbar, Jesse Lingard, who hit the post after rounding the goalkeeper, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who couldn’t get a shot away quick enough – were really poor. United should have been leading by three or four goals going into added time, but Mourinho is correct, it was also stupid uses of possession from substitutes Marcus Rashford and Mkhitaryan.
Mourinho was asked whether he was angry after the game on Saturday, but insisted that was very different to how he felt in general.
“I feel great, seriously,” the Portuguese said. “No, it’s one thing to feel angry as a manager, it’s another thing to feel great as a man.
“I feel good, I feel great, I work hard, the players do the same.”
