Eric Cantona has admitted he enjoys watching Manchester City’s football far more than Manchester United’s ahead of this weekend’s huge clash between the two sides.
The Man United legend, speaking regularly in recent weeks due to the launch of his book, admitted that while his heart lies with the Reds and he’ll never stop supporting his former-side, he does prefer Man City’s style of play.
Cantona attributed the difference in the two sides to their managers, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.
“On one side, my heart was, is, and will forever be beating for United,” Cantona said on Eurosport’s Facebook page.
“On the other side, there is this bald guy [Guardiola] whose vision of ‘total football’ gives me a f****** hard on.
“A defence genius Mourinho against an offence genius Guardiola. Borg vs McEnroe. Who do you choose? Come on United!”
There is little doubt that City play more entertaining football than United. But simultaneously, the narrative that United must play boring football because it’s not the same as Guardiola’s at City is tiresome and wrong.
Mourinho’s side are the second highest-scoring team in the league, but have a far better defence than City. The Reds have been exciting, clinical and players like Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku have, at times, though not consistently, produced moments of world-class quality this season.
United will have to show Cantona on Sunday that they can match and better City in terms of the result and the performance.
