Chelsea didn’t have to be mightily impressive in order to take a commanding lead in the first-half as they latched onto a series of poor defensive errors from Huddersfield.
The visitors were afforded acres of space out wide as Huddersfield’s defence was set up narrowly to deal with the interchanging front three of Pedro, Hazard and Willian, and following a sliced clearance from ‘keeper Lossl, Hazard flicked the ball into the path of Willian who played through the onrushing Tiemoue Bakayoko, with his chipped finish ending up in the back of the net via a deflection that arguably sent the original shot goal bound.
Cesar Azpilicueta then sprayed a raking ball out wide to Marcos Alonso who opened up some space to cross the ball onto the head of Willian to finish off a lovely Chelsea move.
In the second-half, Chelsea created yet more chances and Pedro’s lovely curled finish put the game to bed. The diminutive little winger could have added to his tally wasting two good opportunities from inside the area, but the game was already won, and Laurent Depoitre’s header was merely consolation – although Thibaut Courtois will have been annoyed to have conceded so late on against a team lacking any real attacking intent.
Here’s how the Chelsea players rated in the game:
