England manager Gareth Southgate has warned Chelsea man Ruben Loftus-Cheek that he is now no longer an unknown quantity, and will not have it as easy as he did on his debut for the country.
As quoted by the Evening Standard, the young midfielder was hailed by Southgate but was warned of the difficult tests that await.
I think he obviously has taken a lot from the game, found it a great experience, that he was learning throughout it. It’s incredible really that he’s had so few 90-minute appearances in the league yet we’re bringing him into that sort of environment.
Loftus-Cheek made his full England debut on Friday night in the 0-0 draw against Germany. He was one of the team’s brightest sparks throughout and caught the eye of many with an impressive maiden performance in his country’s colours at senior level.
Southgate was reserved in his praise for Loftus-Cheek but did reiterate his belief in him following such an impressive debut.
We believe in him. He did really well. But sometimes the first game is easier because nobody is aware of you.
Loftus-Cheek has spending his season on loan at Crystal Palace, who have been struggling this season. They are rock bottom, but the promising midfielder has had a positive impact, with some impressive displays in the middle of the park.
