Jose Mourinho was present for Sweden’s 1-0 win over Italy in the first leg of their World Cup playoff last weekend to monitor RB Leipzig winger Emil Forsberg.
The 26-year-old, who arrived at the club in 2015 back when they occupied Germany’s second tier, was an indispensable figure during a season that saw them unexpectedly finish in second spot, making 30 Bundesliga appearances
Manchester United’s interest in Forsberg, along with that of AC Milan, dates back to the summer, but the winger made it clear that he was committed to his endeavours under manager Ralph Hasenhüttl.
And according to the Mail Online‘s Simon Jones, Mourinho was present alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Stockholm to watch a scintillating display from Forsberg, who harassed Andrea Barzagli all game and claimed the ‘Man of the Match’ award as a result.
Much was made of why Mourinho, who travelled to see Mijat Gacinovic during Serbia’s 3-2 defeat to Austria last month, was watching this particular game in Zlatan’s box, which was apparently bigger than the one reserved for the Swedish royal family.
It was speculated that he could have been monitoring Marco Verratti – a perfect Michael Carrick replacement linked with Man United over the summer – whilst also keeping an eye on Victor Lindelof and Matteo Darmian.
But it turns out that, following a spell of continued brilliance in his second Bundesliga season, his interest in the forward has accelerated, and you can be sure he won’t be alone in pursuing Leipzig’s biggest talents in light of what has been a truly magnificent rise to the European elite over the last two years.
