Mourinho delighted with Lukaku's goalscoring performance vs Newcastle

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that he was happy to see Romelu Lukaku end his goal drought vs Newcastle United.

The Red Devils overcame an intense away side who even managed to open the scoring after the home side’s slow start to the game.

Lukaku was amongst the goalscorers who helped United turn the result around and complete a comeback win against the Premier League new boys.

It was no coincidence that the Belgian’s goalscoring performance was due to the return of Paul Pogba who himself was in the scoresheet.

Having not scored for his club since before the October international fixtures, Romelu and Mourinho were both happy to see his goal drought end.

According to the Daily Post, Jose said: “He is a striker and strikers like to score goals. It is not a problem for me if he works like he always does and he doesn’t score goals but for their self-esteem, their confidence, strikers like to score goals.

“He was not doing that for us for a few matches and then all that can affect strikers’ confidence. I was really happy that he scored that goal.”

Anthony Martial, Pogba and Chris Smalling all found the net as well against Rafa Benitez’s side, making the win look more comfortable than perhaps it was.

Newcastle United often looked capable of hitting the home side on the counter attack and it was thanks to some poor finishing that saw United concede just one goal.

On the other hand, the Red Devils put the away side to the sword and were for once clinical in their shooting.

The match was also highlighted for the return of Marcos Rojo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the aforementioned Pogba.

However, only Paul started the match and his presence proved crucial, grabbing a goal and an assist in an impressive display.

Ibrahimovic meanwhile was substituted onto the field in the place of Martial and every touch was met with cheers from the Old Trafford crowd.

With some key players once more available to Jose Mourinho, United head into a busy winter period confident of securing results.
