Nemanja Matic is facing an uphill struggle to recover from an injury sustained against Watford in time for Manchester United’s trip to Arsenal on Sunday, according to reports.
The Serbian, who has started 19 of Man United’s 22 games so far this season, came off during the 4-2 win at Vicarage Road on Tuesday after 53 minutes with a muscle problem.
Mourinho is also potentially without Marouane Fellaini, whose knee problem has resurfaced, while Michael Carrick continues to work back to full fitness after undergoing a cardiac ablation.
And according to the Daily Star‘s Jeremy Cross, the 29-year-old will undergo thorough treatment at Carrington before the squad travels to London, but Mourinho isn’t confident of seeing his £40m signing recover in time to feature.
Matic endured a difficult opening ten minutes against Watford and, amid the attacking frenzy from both sides, he took a back seat as others seemingly started to dominate the affair, but United’s second half scare which saw them concede twice revealed just how much control and balance he brings to the entire side.
And with Arsenal, like Watford, set to place emphasis on moving the ball quickly through the lines on Saturday, you sense that Matic’s presence could be pivotal.
