Chelsea have emerged as candidates to sign Manchester United target Mesut Ozil next summer, according to reports from Germany.
Arsene Wenger recently confirmed that the German would not leave the club in January but doubts over his long term future at the Emirates continue surface, with talks over a new contract failing to progress since the summer.
Jose Mourinho has reportedly expressed interest in bringing Ozil to Old Trafford on a free next summer after developing a strong working relationship with the playmaker at Real Madrid, although such talk has quietened in recent times.
But according to German media outlet SportBild (via Bleacher Report), Antonio Conte, who has urged the club’s hierarchy to invest in the squad, will enter the race for Ozil in the summer.
Wenger’s recent comments surrounding Ozil, whilst dismissing the prospect of a January move, contain a clear element of resignation.
“In my head, they stay until the end of the season. Unless something unbelievable happens I don’t see that changing.”
This is a far cry from the Frenchman’s assertion that talks over a new contract were going well. Just like Antoine Griezmann, a summer departure for Ozil looks more like a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’, and supporters will desperately hope Mourinho’s good relationship with the 29-year-old proves to be the decisive factor behind his next move.
