Manchester United sent scouts to monitor the progress of Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo during a 2-0 win over Taca de Portugal on Saturday, according to reports from Portugal.
Grimaldo received his footballing education at Barcelona’s La Masia and established himself at the Portuguese champions last season, making 21 appearances in total.
He impressed in both games against Man United last month and Jose Mourinho is thought to be keen on adding a left-back to his ranks following Luke Shaw‘s failure to impose himself on the squad this season.
And according to Portuguese media outlet A Bola (via Bleacher Report), scouts from United were present to watch him in action ahead of a potential bid.
The first thing that strikes you about Grimaldo is the speed and efficiency with which he covers ground, marauding down the left hand side in a kind of calculated attacking frenzy.
But the next aspect you start to discover is far more enticing: honed at Barcelona’s famous academy at the same time when Pep Guardiola was winning quite literally everything, Grimaldo possesses the technical skill-set to play as a midfielder if he wanted. His low centre of gravity and awareness in possession makes him a nightmare to rob of possession.
And while the 22-year-old’s positioning at the back can still improve, you’d do well to find a more nimble full-back in the game at the moment. Mourinho ought to keep an eye out as the January window approaches.
