Jose Mourinho receives blow in his pursuit of this 26yo Bundesliga superstar

RB Leipzig winger and Manchester United target Emil Forsberg has dismissed reports hinting towards a potential move to Old Trafford next summer.

The 26-year-old was a key component of Leipzig’s unexpected rise to second place – a position they have maintained this term as well – in their very first season playing in the Bundesliga and made it clear over the summer that he was going nowhere amid interest from Man United and AC Milan.

Nevertheless, Jose Mourinho was present alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Sweden’s 1-0 win over Italy last week to watch Forsberg pick up the ‘Man of the Match’ award ahead of a possible summer bid.

But the Swede, when asked about the reports, was quick to laconically dismiss the idea of leaving the Bundesliga side.

“I also read that in the papers,” he said. “My focus is on RB.”

Mourinho would have been frustrated to see the board fail to secure the services of Ivan Perisic last summer and has pin-pointed Forsberg as a potential alternative. But why him?

For one thing, he is an indefatigable worker, capable of tracking up and down the pitch and, as seen during Sweden’s heroic 0-0 draw in Milan, can follow a game plan to the very finest detail.

Couple that with his capacity for incisive passing and eye for goal and you have quite a player, yet not necessarily one who addresses the fact that United don’t have a clear-cut, traditional winger who can provide quality delivery for Romelu Lukaku from the byline.

Forsberg is not that type of player; the Swede prefers to pick up the ball and ghost inside, giving the full-back a chance to push up.

Mourinho ought to fixate his attention on somebody espousing a style of wing play notably differing from what he has at the moment. And Forsberg, for all his talent, doesn’t offer that.
