Jose Mourinho addresses Michael Carrick's role at Manchester United

Michael Carrick will be offered a coaching role at Manchester United when he decides to call a day on his playing career, Jose Mourinho has stated.

The Portuguese was commenting on Carrick after the Englishman cleared up concerns over his health on Friday.

Carrick took the Twitter to announce he had been suffering from an irregular heart rhythm before undergoing a cardiac ablation following complaints of dizziness after Man United’s EFL Cup win against Burton Albion.

Mourinho was effusive in his praise of the United captain.

“Michael [Carrick] as a person is more important than Michael as a player,” Mourinho told reporters after Saturday’s 1-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

“Carrick knows my coaching staff has a chair for him when he wants it. I want it, the board wants it. The owner wants it. He wants to be a player until the end of the season.”

Carrick has already been doing some work with United’s youth sides, gaining experience at the Reds’ Carrington training complex. It sounds like things are pretty much lined up for him to step into a first team coaching role at the end of the season.

The 36-year-old has hardly played this season, rarely breaking into the side before a chance against Burton. Since then, his health has clearly been problematic, but he’s back in training and hoping to return to action soon.

Carrick is a wonderful person to have at the club. He celebrated a decade in Red earlier this year with a brilliant testimonial as the 2008 Champions League-Premier League double winning side faced a Michael Carrick All Stars XI.

The sheer number of quality players that returned, when they usually turn down such games, to play and honour Carrick was a testament to his reputation. He has been a fantastic player for many years, has always been honest to media and fans and is a great role model as captain of Manchester United.

To see him stay at the club as a coach under Mourinho would be brilliant.
