International Reds: Lukaku makes Belgium history as Man United youngster gets 3 assists

Tuesday was a busy day for Manchester United’s international stars of all ages, as Romelu Lukaku made history for Belgium.

The 24-year-old is now his country’s top goalscorer with 31 goals, having equalled the record in the Red Devils’ first game of this international break with a double in a 3-3 draw with Mexico. He headed home the winner this time in a 1-0 friendly win against Japan.

As England drew 0-0 with Brazil at Wembley, Ashley Young came on as a late substitute to deservedly make his first appearance for the Three Lions since 2013. He hasn’t been in the squad for years, but his early season brilliant form at left-back earned him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s side.

Marcus Rashford started up front in that game and looked threatening on a number of occasions, forcing a good save from Allison at one point after a fierce, dipping shot from the edge of the area. Jesse Lingard came on as a first-half substitute, replacing the injured Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Anthony Martial was in good form for France with a fantastic assist for Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette in a 2-2 draw against Germany. With a sudden burst of pace, Martial touched it between both feet before clipping it gently across the six-yard box for Lacazette.

Goalkeeper David de Gea started for Spain in a 3-3 friendly draw with Russia, while his understudy Sergio Romero was rested by Argentina in a 4-2 loss to Nigeria.

Daley Blind was in action for the Netherlands as they dispatched Romania 3-0 in a friendly while Timothy Fosu-Mensah sat on the substitutes bench.

Thankfully, Nemanja Matic was given a rest again, having already been left at home for Serbia’s win against China on Friday. Matic was afforded a second rest as his team drew 1-1 with South Korea. It’s the first prolonged rest for the Serb all season, and should help him.

In youth news, Kieran O’Hara started for Republic of Ireland’s under-21s in a 2-1 defeat against Norway. Regan Poole started for Wales in a 0-0 draw in a UEFA U21 Euro qualifier against Romania and Joel Pereira played the full game for Portugal’s youngsters in a 2-1 win against Switzerland.

Indy Boonen got three assists in just 71 minutes for Belgium’s under-19s in a 5-3 win against Nishan Burkart’s Switzerland as Boonen’s fellow forward was brought off at half-time. Mason Greenwood got an assist for England’s under-17s as he started alongside Man United teammates Ethan Laird and James Garner in a 2-1 win against Germany.
