Frank Lampard has explained why Jose Mourinho might not favour Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the future.
The Armenian has been dropped by Mourinho for United’s last two games after woeful form.
He started the season appearing to be in a fantastic spell, improving on last season, as he quickly led the Premier League’s goalscoring charts.
But the assists dried up and the performances remained underwhelming.
“At first he [Mourinho] wasn’t having him too much,” Lampard said, speaking on BT Sport on Wednesday night.
“He then showed lots of moments of quality to help Manchester Untied win big games last year.
“But with Jose Mourinho, I think he likes pace and power. With [Marcus] Rashford and [Anthony] Martial, he’s got so many options.
“I think Mkhitaryan has disappointed him too many times this season.”
Mkhitaryan has been taken out of the team, and is unlikely to get back in anytime soon. Mourinho started Juan Mata at the weekend against Newcastle United and he impressed in the Reds’ 4-1 victory.
It’s true that Mourinho often focuses on pace and power, but there can often be a place in his side for one creative player who lacks that. Mkhitaryan appeared to be ready to fill that role, but not based on his recent form.
Lampard’s correct to a certain extent, but Mata coming in for Mkhitaryan reduces the credibility of his point. Mata is hardly fast or strong.
United have been linked with Mesut Ozil in recent weeks, a potential replacement for Mkhitaryan, while Mata has outlined his desire to stay at Old Trafford for many years to come.
