Eric Cantona has made it clear that Jose Mourinho is the right manager for Manchester United, noting that the Portuguese will continue to win trophies at Old Trafford.
Mourinho endured a difficult Premier League campaign last year, finishing 24 points behind Chelsea, but managed to guide his side to League Cup and Europa League glory.
He has made a better start to life domestically, with his side in second spot after 12 games, and will expect to see his side top their Champions League group despite a galling defeat to Basel on Wednesday.
And Cantona, speaking in an interview with Full Time Devils, noted that he backed Mourinho to win further silverware at Old Trafford.
“United always played in a good way and enjoy the game,” he said. “It’s the philosophy of the club it’s very strong, it’s a creative game, passing, movement.”
“But winning things is also very important and Mourinho has won a lot of things and he will win a lot of things. He has already won things with United and he will win many more things with United I think.
“I prefer when it’s more fancy and more creative of course. It’s why I loved to play for United.
“I really love Mourinho. I love the way he played it’s just I prefer if it is more offensive. THat’s just beacuse It’s United. It’s like Barcelona: if they played in a defensive way nobody would understand.
“This philosophy at United is very strong for the kids. Now it’s a bit difficult to understand. But I do love Mourinho and he can win things and he will win things which is very important.”
That defeat in Switzerland came as a chilling shock to the system for all connected with the club. The way in which United slipped away from total control to voluntary capitulation at the back would have concerned Mourinho more than recent set-backs against Huddersfield Town and Chelsea – if only because the manner of defeat betrayed the core principles of what he has always drummed into any side he has managed.
But this alone doesn’t constitute cause for panic. United are second in the table, with Manchester City the only side to score more in the Premier League so far this season, and find themselves well placed in the League Cup and Champions League.
The most valuable aspect of Mourinho’s presence, however, is not something you can point at but easily notice: an inbuilt capacity for doing what it takes to get over the finish line, winning trophies, and annoying everyone in the process.
