Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag made the huge decision to make a change to his number one goalkeeper this summer, ending David de Gea’s twelve-year stay at Old Trafford.
Andre Onana was signed from Inter Milan to replace the Spaniard and allow United to play in a way consistent with Ten Hag’s philosophy.
However, the 27-year-old has suffered a turbulent start to life in Manchester, looking less than assured and making some costly errors.
As reported by The Mirror, former United defender Rio Ferdinand has called on Onana’s teammates to help him through his sticky start and rally around him when a mistake happens.
“Those moments are about the experienced players making the new ones more confident. When they make a good save it’s about reassuring them, when they make a mistake, it’s about not berating them,” he said.
Ferdinand likened Onana’s situation to that of De Gea when he joined the club where the Spanish stopper also struggled to adapt to life as United’s number one.
The defender played in front of De Gea throughout his early struggles and says the current crop needs to ensure Onana feels he has their trust.
“There will be times when you have to berate someone like that but when you know someone was young and fragile, like David was, you’ve got to be clever around those situations.
“He wanted to feel his teammates had confidence. If your teammates have confidence in you, f*** what anyone else has said. That’s what the experienced players at Man United have to do now, rally around,” said Rio.
Ferdinand backed Onana to find his feet at United in the coming weeks, praising the ‘keeper’s attitude and pointing out his experience of big games during his career.
“He looks like a confident kid. I’ve spoken to him a couple of times and he seems confident. Mistakes are part of it. He understands that.
“But we have to remember that he’s not a goalkeeper who hasn’t had these moments before. He’s made mistakes and come back. He’s played for Inter Milan in a Champions League final, he’s played for Ajax in the Europa League final,” he said.
Ferdinand concluded by adding that he has spoken to staff at United who echo the confidence in the Cameroonian’s character and he expects to see the best of Onana very soon.
“He has the experience of making mistakes, rebuilding and going again. I think he can do that. He’s made of the right stuff. Speaking to the staff, they say forget about ability because you can tell he has the character for this,” he added.
Onana and United face a huge week ahead with tonight’s (Tuesday) must-win Champions League game against FC Copenhagen before the crunch Manchester Derby at Old Trafford on Sunday.
