Enigmatic midfielder will "100% leave Manchester United this summer" - Fabrizio Romano

Fred will “100% leave Manchester United this summer”, according to Frabrizio Romano.

Though his potential new club remains unclear, the Italian transfer guru is under no doubts the midfielder will be departing Old Trafford.

Galatasaray have been the club most strongly linked with Fred, though Romano believes this prospective deal is becoming “complicated” and, consequently, “other clubs are entering the race.”

Lazio and Fulham have been rumoured to be interested in Fred, alongside the Turkish side, and may attempt to capitalise. Romano also contends a move to Saudi Arabia is a “possibility” and United fans should “keep an eye” on this.

Ultimately, Romano believes that the club will work with Fred to choose the potential “best option” for the player. There is no doubt on United’s desire to sell however.

Fred’s prospective outbound transfer appears linked to the club’s pursuit of Sofyan Amrabat.

Romano asserts the club wish to sell Fred to “make the deal happen” for the Moroccan midfielder, indicating United may be facing financial restrictions after their exorbitant summer so far.

The signings of Erik ten Hag’s first-choice targets – Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Højlund – ensure the club have committed to a minimum spend of £166 million this window alone. For the club to continue further recruitment to Old Trafford, players must depart in the opposite direction.

Though Fred has proven a valuable squad member at times under Ten Hag’s stewardship, the manager would prioritise a player more adept in the defensive midfield position over the box-to-box Brazilian. Fred is a potent presser but lacks the requisite composure and control to operate deeper in midfield.

Furthermore, Scott McTominay’s status as a homegrown player, as well as his attitude and leadership qualities, ensure Fred is further along the departure queue than the other half of the much-maligned McFred pivot. Though Fred has proven the more effective player of the pair over the past few seasons, McTominay’s value off the pitch is higher.

Romano believes United will “focus” on Amrabat more decisively now they have almost finished the deal with Atalanta for Højlund.

With the club appearing to be operating on a one-in one-out policy in midfield, Fred will “100% leave” Old Trafford to make room for the Fiorentina man.

Video: "Nice try": Bruno Fernandes fights back on Onana controversy

Bruno Fernandes has responded to rumours of a rift between himself and Manchester United’s new number 1, Andre Onana.

Following United’s defeat to Real Madrid in their pre-season America tour, some social media users highlighted an incident within the game where Bruno appeared to have ignored Onana.

The incident in question came after United had given away a corner, and were setting up to defend it.

Onana, who is known for being vocal, yelled out to Fernandes telling him where he wanted him to take up defensive positions.

According to the eagle-eyed social media commenters, Bruno appeared to ignore Onana, brushing past him without making eye contact as the Cameroonian spoke to him.

One poster said, “Captain Bruno doesn’t want anyone to correct him or advise him. Bruno completing (sic) ignores new signing Onana.”

But in the comments on the post, Bruno responded to the person who made the comment, saying:

‘Nice how you could see me ignoring him when I was going to the place he was telling me to be positioned in the corner.’

‘Nice try to make it look bad.’

In perspective, the incident is not likely to bother Erik ten Hag much.

On-pitch disagreements between players are not unusual, and with Bruno having clarified that this was not even the case, the matter can safely be laid to rest.

He's a "fantastic boy" - Dortmund coach praises United star amidst transfer speculation

Manchester United’s pre-season Tour of the United States ended in defeat last night, with Borussia Dortmund beating the Red Devils by three goals to two, in Las Vegas.

Diogo Dalot and Antony struck for United but a Donyell Malen brace and a Youssoufa Moukoko winner with 20 minutes remaining was enough to give the Germans the victory.

Jadon Sancho played the majority of the game in the false 9 position with Erik ten Hag plugging the gap before the imminent arrival of Rasmus Hojlund.

Sancho showed glimpses of class against his former club and was arguably United’s most impressive attacking player on the night.

Speculation surrounding the future of the United man has been rife over the last few weeks, including rumours of a return to Dortmund.

As reported by football journalist Patrick Berger, after the victory in Vegas BVB boss Edin Terzic spoke on the subject of a return for Sancho.

“Jadon is a fantastic boy and is under contract with #mufc. We do not comment on players who are not under contract with us and wish him all the best for the coming season at Manchester,” said Terzic.

Despite Sancho not quite finding the form in Manchester that he showed in Germany as yet, it would be a surprise to see him leave United this summer.

The forward has looked sharp in pre-season and his ability to be able to play in almost any of the attacking positions may prove to be an ace up Ten Hag’s sleeve this season.

Sancho’s versatility means he can operate off the left or right flank, as a ten or as we’ve seen in pre-season, in the false nine position.

The 23-year-old is entering the third and probably most important year of his United career, with fans desperate to see the Jadon Sancho that lit up the Bundesliga.

Sancho will be vying for a starting place in the new season’s curtain raiser when Wolves visit Old Trafford on August 14.

"It's nothing against Harry": Ten Hag makes brutal admission about Maguire's future

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has opened up about the tough decisions he made to let David de Gea go and strip Harry Maguire of the captaincy.

In a Q&A with journalists in Las Vegas (via The MEN), the boss said that making tough decisions such as this represents “the difference between a manager and a human being.”

“In the end, top football is about getting results and then you have to make decisions but you have to do it in an honest and transparent way,” he said.

“The club appointed me to take such decisions in these moments.”

Ten Hag was asked specifically about removing Maguire as captain, and insisted “it’s nothing against Harry”.

“It was in advantage of the team, then you have to make the decision,” he said.

“But I will not say that Harry isn’t part of this group. He has to fight for his position.

“He is a very good centre-back, and I believe in the potential of Harry Maguire.”

One reporter challenged the manager, commenting “You say you believe in him but the evidence suggests otherwise. Does Harry need to move on to play regularly, going forward?”

“Didn’t I play him?,” was Ten Hag’s terse response.

“I have often chosen a player ahead of Harry, that’s true… But he has to show he is better for the team than Rapha or Victor. I think that’s a really normal situation in top football.”

This brutal response also clearly revealed Ten Hag’s stance that it is only the right centre back position that Maguire would be considered for. Historically, the England man played LCB, a role now ruled out of bounds for him, it seems, no matter how well he plays.

Asked to confirm that it is up to Maguire whether he stays or leaves, Ten Hag said:

“Exactly. When you are at Man United you have to fight for your position and bring your skills in and prove you are the best for the team, and contribute the most.”

Former United midfielder a shock "target" for Ligue 1 side - Report

Nemanja Matić has emerged as a surprise “target” for Ligue 1 side, Rennes.

The French club are reportedly preparing to lose their midfield starlet, Lesley Ugochukwu, to Chelsea, in a deal worth in the “region of €30m.”

Interestingly, the suggestion is Chelsea will then loan Ugochukwu to Strasbourg, whom share ownership with the London club.

Ugochukwu has firmly established himself in the Rennes team over the past two seasons, playing 26 times last year. Standing an imposing 188cm tall and possessing athleticism and strong defensive attributes, the French midfielder will require a like-for-like replacement in midfield.

Which is where Matić enters the fray.

Matić has been “put forward” by officials at Rennes as an option to fill this void.

While the Serbian does not possess the speed of Ugochukwu, they share similar physical profiles. Matić would also bring far greater levels of technical ability to Rennes’ midfield, as well a level of experience any dressing room would welcome.

Having joined Roma from United, Matić has played an impressive 50 times in all competitions, providing 2 goals and 2 assists in the process.

It has marked the third reunion between the Serb and manager, José Mourinho; the pair having previously worked together at Chelsea and Manchester United. Mourinho described Matić as a “genius” when he brought the midfielder to Old Trafford.

Matic’s contract at Roma has been extended automatically as he met the renewal criteria of meeting a minimum number of games last season. However, Rennes’ pursuit may be grounded in a confidence that he could now be moved on at a relatively low cost.

The French club are also reportedly targeting Tiémoué Bakayoko. The Frenchman came “through the academy” at Rennes and knows the club intimately. He is a free agent at present, having left Chelsea at the end of last season.

While Bakayoko may represent the simpler deal, a player of the profile and experience of Matić would be a significant coup for a club making a strong push for Champions League football next season.

United agree to "biggest" commercial deal in Premier League history - Report

Manchester United and adidas have agreed to the “biggest kit deal” in Premier League history.

Worth a staggering £900 million, the 10-year partnership extends the German sportwear giant’s role as official kit supplier of United until 2035, and ensures a “significant increase” on the current terms of their deal. This translates to revenue worth £90 million annually for United.

Sources at Old Trafford indicates the new deal provides the club with “certainty” over their “biggest source” of income for the next decade, helping to reinforce “stability” at United.

Richard Arnold, United’s Chief Executive,  described the relationship between the club and their sponsor as:

“…one of the most iconic in world sport, forged through a shared commitment to style, flair and, most importantly, high performance.”

His adidas comparative, Bjorn Gulden, echoes these sentiments:

“Adidas and Manchester United are two of the most important brands in international football and it is very natural for us to continue our co-operation.”

Adidas had sponsored United previously, from 1980 to 1992, but the two entities only rekindled this relationship at the beginning of the 2015/16 season. The agreement to extend this all the way through to 2035 locks club and sponsor into a two decade-long partnership.

United sources indicate it is the most lucrative deal in the history of English football, trumping the previous 10-year £750 million partnership they possessed with Adidas.

United also stress the additional funds will be spread throughout the club, with the deal enabling them to “increase the focus on the women’s team,” reintroduced in 2018.

Amidst uncertainty over the club’s long-term future, with the protracted takeover saga having no definitive conclusion in sight, a deal of this magnitude will provide assurances of United’s continuing commercial hegemony.

Fans will, however, be hoping this commercial might will soon translate into comparable success on the pitch.

Ten Hag demands players improve to the "next levels" in candid interview - Report

Erik ten Hag has spoken on a wide range of subjects in a candid interview during his team’s pre-season tour of America.

Speaking to the BBC, The Dutchman stated his Manchester United squad must “raise the bar” next season as the side continues to be reconstructed in their manager’s image. A better level of “consistency” is integral to the targets Ten Hag has set them.

As confirmation of the agreement between Atalanta and United for the transfer of Rasmus Højlund emerged, the club’s spending this summer has now reached a minimum of £166 million. Big moves and big decisions, made at the behest of Ten Hag, demonstrate the faith United officials possess in their manager.

Ten Hag spoke of his satisfaction with his first season at Old Trafford, but quickly stressed “we are not where we want to be.”

While United were able to “beat any opponent” last season, they could not do so on a “consistent basis.” Eliminating this inconsistency is the “step we have to make,” Ten Hag contends.

His new selection of recruits, including Mason Mount and Andre Onana, will help the team make this step. Onana, in particular, will be vital to the continued evolution of the side; “With him, something will change in our game,” the manager said.

Ten Hag further stressed his happiness with the fact the two players were able to be a significant part of United’s pre-season, as this is fundamental to “integrating in the team and getting social connections.” Football is a “team sport and you need partnerships” to be successful, he remarked.

The Dutch manager was also ardent in his belief that the continued uncertainty over Harry Maguire’s future would not affect the team on the pitch, in the same way Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive exit from Old Trafford did not, saying:

“We are building a project. We want to win trophies so we have to invest in the way we play, we have to invest in the team. And our focus is not on one player.”

Ten Hag spoke about his relationship with the Glazers, with whom he has a “good information line”, as well as his belief that the emerging Saudi Arabian league was not a “problem” for the Premier League given that the “big players” still wish to play in England; a comment which will have undoubtedly enraged a certain Portuguese forward.

The overaching tone of the interview centred on the need for continued progress however.

Ten Hag has been significantly financially backed, for the second summer in a row, with the acquisition of his three first-choice targets. He knows the pressure will be on for United’s rebuild to continue in a similarly positive manner to his first season. Ten Hag asserts this will only occur if his players are capable of improving to the “next levels.”

United planning offer for CL winner who has made a great "impression" on Ten Hag - report

Manchester United have already strengthened in midfield, in goal and are one step away from officially reinforcing their attack.

Mason Mount is expected to add creativity and energy to the midfield while Andre Onana should change the way the team plays out from the back after disappointing displays led to David de Gea’s departure.

After months of complaining, manager Erik ten Hag finally will see firepower being added up front and despite his relative inexperience, Rasmus Hojlund is expected to take a bit of the load off Marcus Rashford‘s shoulders.

Earlier in the window, it seemed certain that the Reds will also bring in a new recruit in defence with the future of Harry Maguire uncertain.

Defensive changes

Serie A champion Kim Min-jae was the preferred choice but with United finding it difficult to offload the Englishman, the South Korean ended up moving to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Maguire’s wages and United’s asking price have so far put off West Ham but options like Chelsea are still alive and there is a chance the former skipper leaves before the window closes.

United would ideally prefer to bring in another experienced head but Ten Hag also wants another defensive midfielder and a versatile forward and that might leave very little room in the budget for a centre-back.

The Sun have reported that the Red Devils could turn to Jonny Evans in that case. The United academy graduate recently signed a short-term deal the club until pre-season.

That deal was scheduled to end after the Wrexham game but the Northern Ireland skipper has been asked to stay back and is currently part of first-team training.

The 35-year-old is said to have impressed the United boss to such an extent that a new one-year contract could be in the offing in case Maguire does end up leaving.

“Jonny Evans has made such an impression on Manchester United’s coaching team that he could stay on beyond the summer. Insiders say Evans is in such good shape he could be part of the squad for the new campaign.

Evans could stay on

“United could lose Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly in the current window, and with the ongoing takeover saga muddying the waters over the transfer kitty, Ten Hag is wary of being left short.

“Evans’ leadership qualities, and ability to play from the back, have caught the manager’s eye – and could see him being given a contract.”

The former Leicester City star has so far played in two friendlies and he impressed against Olympique Lyon but struggled against the physically-imposing Wrexham players.

The Northern Irish centre back has won three Premier League titles at the club as well as the Champions League during his decade-long stay.

PL high-flyers "enquired" about permanent deal for United's pre-season sensation - report

Manchester United were facing a huge conundrum heading into the summer transfer window with regards to their goalkeeping situation.

However, Erik ten Hag’s intervention following the FA Cup final debacle saw David de Gea leave the club after 12 years. In came Andre Onana from Inter Milan, and he impressed against Real Madrid in his unofficial debut for the club.

The Red Devils may have solved their main goalkeeping issue but there is still a bit of work left, with the futures of quite a few goalies still hanging in the balance.

United still need a reserve keeper with Dean Henderson reluctant to play second-fiddle. Nottingham Forest are still working on a move which is likely to be a loan deal with an obligation to buy.

United’s goalkeeping department keeps changing

Tom Heaton played the whole game against Arsenal but did not emerge for the Real Madrid game and so far Ten Hag has been reluctant to let him leave with Luton Town and Everton both interested.

Interestingly, the future of Matej Kovar is still to be decided. The 23-year-old won the league with Sparta Prague last season and while they wanted him this season as well, it seems like the Reds want a permanent exit.

Kovar was very impressive in the opening two pre-season games, highlighting his skill with the ball at his feet but he found his name was missing from the US pre-season squad.

He has since gone back to Prague to undergo individual training, waiting for learn of United’s plans for him. At that point it seemed like a loan deal would be the most likely outcome.

But it seems United are open to a permanent exit. Sparta were left shocked when United asked for €7million for a outright sale, a figure far beyond their reach and they have since solved their goalkeeping crisis.

However, there is still significant interest in the Czech Republic U21 international including from the Premier League as reported by Infotbal.cz.

They have mentioned Premier League high-flyers Aston Villa as one of the interested parties who have even enquired about the terms for a transfer.

“Aston Villa looks attractive, for example , which inquired about the terms of a transfer from Manchester United. But that’s where it stayed for now, because its number one and world champion Emiliano Martínez (30) remains at the club.”

Kovar interest growing

Two unnamed Bundesliga clubs are also in the race.

Another Czech outlet iDnes.cz have mentioned Cadiz as being another interested outfit. “Cádiz, the fourteenth team in the Spanish league last season, contacted Manchester.”

If no one agrees to cough up seven to ten million euros, United will send Kovář out on another loan, but this time they want the goalie to play in the Championship.

Hull City have reportedly expressed an interest in taking the United academy graduate on loan. If Kovar succeeds in the second division, there is a chance he might see some minutes for the United first team going forward.

Kovar’s United deal lasts until 2025 with the club having the option of extending it by another year. He could have made a fine reserve keeper but Ten Hag wants someone with experience, hence his reluctance to allow Heaton to leave.

Ryan Reynolds "personally intervened" in row between Wrexham and Manchester United - Report

It’s not every day you receive a personal message of support from an A-list Hollywood star.

But that’s exactly what Nathan Bishop experienced as Ryan Reynolds chose to intervene in the row between Manchester United and Wrexham, following the two sides’ pre-season friendly in San Diego.

Wrexham won the match 3-1 against a United side entirely comprised of reserve team and youth players. And Jonny Evans.

Ten Hag lamented the performance by his players, who were subject to a level of physicality and intensity they struggled to acclimate to. “This is men’s football,” their manager succinctly remarked.

The Snapdragon stadium was sold-out with a raucous crowd of 34,248 in attendance. Ten Hag believes this experience will help the younger players to learn how to “deal with the pressure of the crowd”; a prerequisite to be able to perform successfully at United.

One particular moment in the first half, however, caused concern for every person in the stadium, whether their allegiance was to United or Wrexham.

Nathan Bishop, United’s goalkeeper, collided with Paul Mullin, Wrexham’s heroic goalscorer last season, in an awful late challenge. The forward would crumple to the ground with medical staff quickly taking to the field.

Mullin was able to slowly walk off the pitch but required an oxygen mask to do so. He would later be diagnosed with a punctured lung and will miss the start of Wrexham’s entrance back into the English football league next season.

His manager, Phil Parkinson, was furious.

In the aftermath of the match, when asked about the incident, he described Bishop’s challenge as “reckless” and, somewhat unprofessionally, warned the goalkeeper to “steer clear” of Wrexham.

United staff were reportedly “unhappy” with these comments, believing them to have exacerbated the situation and potentially opened Bishop up to online abuse.

The goalkeeper appeared “visibly shaken” as he left the pitch at half-time, but was immediate in tweeting a public apology to Mullin following the game. Bishop would also reach out personally to the injured forward, via other Wrexham players, to reiterate this message.

Ryan Reynolds, co-owner of Wrexham, praised the manner in which Bishop handled the aftermath of the incident. Acting as a  “peacekeeper”, Reynolds personally contacted Bishop to acknowledge his post-match actions and “wished him luck for the future.”

Parkinson’s comments, though inflammatory, are understandable in the heat of the moment; watching your talismanic forward struggle to breathe will affect any manager. United’s response is one of a club defending one of their own, despite the unfortunate repercussions of their player’s challenge.

Reynolds’ words will have helped to quell any lingering feelings of animosity between the clubs, and been a comforting experience for an evidently remorseful Bishop. A classy move.
