xG flops: only three United players have performed in front of goal this season

Manchester United’s marathon season is reaching its conclusion, with just four league games remaining.

After back-to-back defeats to Brighton and West Ham, respectively, United need three wins from their final four games to guarantee Champions League football for next season.

Additionally, United have scored just once in their last three games, an issue that has stunted them for the majority of the campaign.

Outside of Marcus Rashford‘s goals, United have been short of numbers in front of goal this season.

United are languishing behind the rest of the current top seven for goals scored by quite a distance.

In fact, as reported by The Peoples Person, United rank a lowly 16th for chances converted to goals, across the division.

As reported by Laurie Whitwell in The Athletic, individually, United’s stats reflect this, with only three players over performing on their xG (expected goals) across the campaign.

Marcus Rashford has scored 16 league goals from an expected 13.61.

The only other players outscoring their xG are Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho, who only have 7 goals between them.

Sancho has scored 5 from an xG of 3.37 and Garnacho has struck twice from an xG of 1.63.

Underperforming players in front of goal include Bruno Fernandes, who has 6 league goals from an xG of 7.03 and Brazilian winger Antony, who has scored 4 from a 5.64 xG.

The stats back up United’s need for a top class centre-forward to join their ranks this summer, with Harry Kane reportedly at the top of the list.

Kane consistently out performs his expected goals stat with this season no exception, scoring 26 times from an xG of 19.25.

What’s most worrying for Ten Hag at present is the form of Rashford.

United’s top scorer’s form has dipped at worst possible time and given Rashford’s efficiency this season, it’s imperative he rediscovers his goal scoring touch to get United over the line and into the Champions League.
