FWA Player of the Year award sees massive snub for United star

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has been voted in the top five players in the Premier League this season, by the Football Writers Association.

Marcus came fifth in the voting, behind Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne (4th), with Arsenal duo Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka finishing third and second, respectively.

City’s goal machine Erling Haaland won the award by a record breaking margin, securing 82% of the votes.

Rashford looked on course for a higher place in the poll, but a slight dip in form over the last month or so may have swayed the voting. Nonetheless he will feel hard done by.

The Manchester born forward has carried United’s attacking load this season and is just one shy of a 30 goal haul.

16 of Rashford’s goals have come in the Premier League, in which United will hope to secure a top four finish from their remaining four games.

The 25-year-old’s appetite for the big occasion has also continued to impress, scoring goals against Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur as well as home and away against Arsenal.

Rashford also helped United end their six year trophy drought, scoring the killer second goal in the Carabao Cup success against Newcastle, in February.

United boss Erik ten Hag has placed his ultimate trust in Rashford since his arrival and the pair have struck up a strong relationship.

Ten Hag described Rashford as one of the best players in Europe earlier this season and Marcus has certainly repaid the manager’s faith in him.

Despite a season of highlights, Rashford’s biggest moment may still be to come.

United face Manchester City in the FA Cup final at the start of June and a winning goal in that match would surely be the perfect way to bring the curtain down on an outstanding campaign from United’s number 10, and make a statement to the football writers that they have made a mistake in overlooking him.
