The fallout from the 3-0 drubbing to Liverpool at the weekend has left more questions than answers surrounding Mikel Arteta’s starting XI, with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang coming in for plenty of scrutiny.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s performance left a lot to be desired in the home defeat and has looked a shadow of the player he was last season before signing a lucrative contract extension.
Former Arsenal icon Martin Keown called for change after the game, pointing to the bench for 19-year-old Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli, who he think should have started over the captain, especially so after the Gabon striker being dropped against Spurs a few weeks back.
Talking, via the Metro, about the omission of Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Keown made the suggestion that the squad will be questioning the decision before long; “They will be baffled by his continued absence. I know I am.”
Gabriel Martinelli is viewed as a player who can make things happen with a bit more impetus in attack, with Aubameyang struggling to do what he’s done in previous years.
“His team-mates see him in training and know what he can do.”
Arteta will be surely be facing heavy pressure internally and externally for the Brazilian to be given the chance against Slavia Prague on Thursday in the Europa League quarter final.
